FAQs

Business broadband, explained

What is FTTP?
FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) is a full-fibre connection run all the way into your building. Because there is no copper in the path, it delivers the fastest, most reliable broadband speeds available — typically up to 5Gbps and beyond.
What is FTTC?
FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) runs fibre to the green street cabinet, then uses existing copper for the final stretch to your premises. It is widely available and cost-effective, though achievable speed depends on your distance from the cabinet.
What is SOGEA?
SOGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access) is broadband delivered without a traditional phone line. As the old PSTN network is switched off, SOGEA is the modern replacement — giving you data-only broadband over the same fibre infrastructure, without paying for line rental you no longer need.
How fast will my broadband be?
FTTP offers the highest speeds, up to 5Gbps or more. FTTC and SOGEA typically deliver up to around 80Mbps download and 20Mbps upload, depending on your line and distance from the cabinet. We will confirm the exact estimate available at your address before you order.
What is contention?
Contention is how much a connection is shared with other users on the network. Standard broadband is a contended (shared) service, so speeds can dip at busy times. If you need guaranteed, consistent performance, an uncontended leased line dedicated entirely to your business is the better fit.
What do all the broadband terms mean?
A quick glossary: Mbps/Gbps — connection speed (mega/giga bits per second). Download/upload — speed to and from your site. FTTP/FTTC/SOGEA — the type of line delivering your broadband. Contention ratio — how many users share the capacity. Static vs dynamic IP — whether your public IP address stays fixed or changes. If anything is unclear, our team will happily explain it in plain English.
